The Bedroom of Nightmares (or La chambre des cauchemars in the French translation) is a ritual object with symbolism relating to the temporal and celestial union which occurs in the bedroom and speaks on the trauma of birth and conception. The souls of once-living mealworms and ants which inhabit the jar can be related to the womb now barren. This chambre des cauchemars, is a symbolic and largely metaphysical portal between the heavens and earth. This “bedroom” is my attempt at constructing an artificial womb in which a spiritual miscarriage has taken place. Once teeming with the lives of 1000 meal worms and 120 harvester ants, adorned with candles, holy oils, and placed on a slab inscribed with the names of God, this bedroom of nightmares lays as a barren reminder of the failed conception of spirituality.
